Vocabulary Building from Mr. Osada : Day55

このコラムではLIBERTY代表、藤川恭宏のご学友の国際法の教授であられた長田祐卓 (Osada Yutaka) 先生のボキャブラリー集を皆様に提供させていただきます。

 

長田先生は慶應義塾大学、法学部、同大学院（博士課程在学中、アメリカトップランキング校の一つ、ジョージタウン大学ローセンターに留学）博士課程終了後、母校慶応大学、駿河台大学、尚美学園大学、大学院で教鞭を取られました。国際法の中でも特に宇宙法を研究され、慶応大学から今年、博士号を授与されました。

 

このコラムでは特別に長田祐卓先生の長年、蓄積されたとても貴重なボキャブラリー集をご紹介させていただくことになりました。

The surgeon clamped the vein. 外科医は静脈をクランプで締めた。

He clamped the two pieces of wood together. 二枚の板をかすがいで固定した。

The bit was clamped between the horse’s teeth. 馬の歯の間にハミを固定された。

He clamped his mouth shut and refused to speak. 口をしっかりつぐんで喋るのを拒んだ。

 

clamp down on someone/something 取り締まる、弾圧する

Customs officials are clamping down on [=cracking down on] smugglers.

税関は密輸業者を取り締まっている。

The school should clamp down on students who cut classes.

学校は授業をサボる生徒を取り締まるべきだ。

claustrophobia [クラウストロフォウビア] (n.) 閉所恐怖症

get claustrophobia 閉所恐怖所にかかる

She doesn’t go in elevators because of her claustrophobia.

閉所恐怖症のためにエレベーターに入らない。

the claustrophobia of small-town life　小さな町の生活の窮屈さ（閉塞感）

 

clean bill (a～) (n.) お墨付き、太鼓判、（原法案の）修正決議

a clean bill of health 健康の証明、健康の墨付き

Untill they send us a clean bill, we’re going to table whatever else they send us.

彼らが（議会下院）から修正決議をもらうまで、我々は（上院）は彼らが送付する他のどんなものも見送るつもりだ。

Democrats had favored a so-called clean bill that would reopen the government and lift the debt ceiling without any policy changes attached.

日本の食品・薬品安全審議会は、現行の20カ月ではなく、30カ月未満の米国牛の輸入を認める輸入規制の改正に許可を出した。

 

clear (adj.)

clear as mud さっぱりわからない、まるではっきりしない

Physics is clear as mud to me. 物理は僕にはまるでちんぷんかんぷんだ。

 

 

cleave [クリーヴ] （文語）(vi.) 突き進む、(～to) くっつく、固執する、(vt.) 割る、切り裂く

a ship cleaving throough the water 海を突き進む船

cleave the darkness 暗闇を進む

cleave one’s skull (in two) with an ax 斧で頭蓋骨を真っ二つに割る

cleave to something 執着する、つき従う

Many modern religious believers do not cleave to the kind of literal belief in God.

現代の多くの信心深い信者は、あの文字通りの神の存在に固執してはいない。

clemency [クレメンスィ] (n.) 温和、寛容、仁慈、寛大な措置

Snowden appeals to U.S. for clemency.  スノーデン氏米国に慈悲を乞う

The judge chose to show clemency to the truly repentant embezzler.

裁判官は真に悔い改めている横領犯に寛大な措置を執ることを決めた。
