Vocabulary Building from Mr. Osada : Day54
このコラムではLIBERTY代表、藤川恭宏のご学友の国際法の教授であられた長田祐卓 (Osada Yutaka) 先生のボキャブラリー集を皆様に提供させていただきます。
長田先生は慶應義塾大学、法学部、同大学院（博士課程在学中、アメリカトップランキング校の一つ、ジョージタウン大学ローセンターに留学）博士課程終了後、母校慶応大学、駿河台大学、尚美学園大学、大学院で教鞭を取られました。国際法の中でも特に宇宙法を研究され、慶応大学から今年、博士号を授与されました。
このコラムでは特別に長田祐卓先生の長年、蓄積されたとても貴重なボキャブラリー集をご紹介させていただくことになりました。

The horse’s hooves churned up the sod. 馬の蹄が芝をかきあげた。
The wheels began to slowly churn. 車輪がゆっくり回り始めた。

chutzpah [フツパ] 鉄面皮、厚かましさ、大胆さ、図太さ *肯定的な意味で使用。
イエーディッシュ語khutspeに由来。
It took a lot of chutzpah to stand up to him the way she did.
彼女がしたように彼に立ち向かうにはかなりの図太さが必要だった。
Love him or hate him, you have to admire Cohen’s chutzpah.
好きになるにせよ憎むにせよ、コーエン氏の大胆さは褒める必要がある。
cipher [サイファー] ゼロ、取るに足りないもの、暗号、アラビア数字
a cipher that cannot be decoded 解読不能な暗号
She was nothing more than a cipher. (formal) 小者に過ぎなかった。*否定的意味で使用。

circle the drain 死期に近づく、段々と死んでいく
