Vocabulary Building from Mr. Osada : Day2

 

このコラムではLIBERTY代表、藤川恭宏のご学友の国際法の教授であられた長田祐卓 (Osada Yutaka) 先生のボキャブラリー集を皆様に提供させていただきます。

長田先生は慶應義塾大学、法学部、同大学院（博士課程在学中、アメリカトップランキング校の一つ、ジョージタウン大学ローセンターに留学）博士課程終了後、母校慶応大学、駿河台大学、尚美学園大学、大学院で教鞭を取られました。国際法の中でも特に宇宙法を研究され、慶応大学から今年、博士号を授与されました。

このコラムでは特別に長田祐卓先生の長年、蓄積されたとても貴重なボキャブラリー集をご紹介させていただくことになりました。

abridge [アブリッジ] (vt.) （古語）剥奪する、減ずる、（距離・範囲を）短縮する、

（言葉を）凝縮する、簡略化する

 

abridge the freedom of speech 言論の自由を減ずる

abridge a dictionary by omitting rare words 　希少語を省くことで辞書を簡略化する

The library’s hours have been drastically abridged to cut costs.

図書館の開館時間がコスト削減のため大幅に短縮された。

 

 

absolve [アブゾールヴ] (vt.)　放免する、無罪を言い渡す

 

absolve a person from an obligation 人の義務を解除する。

I absolve you from all your sins. 貴方の罪のすべてを許す。

 

 

abstain [アブステイン]

 

abstain on the resolution 決議に棄権する

Ten members voted for the proposal, six members voted against it, and two abstained.

委員10人が提案に賛成し、6人が反対、2人が棄権した

abstain from drinking 飲酒を節制する

 

 

abut [アバット] 隣接する(on)、くっつく(against)

 

Their property abuts (on) our property.  彼らの土地は私たちの土地に隣接している。

The hedges abut the road. 生垣が道路に隣接している。

The end of the board abutted against the foundation.

板の先端が基礎にしっかりくっついていた。

 

 

abuzz [アバァズ] (adj.) （興奮、活気、騒音に）満ちた、がやがやした、

（噂やニュースが）飛び交っている、持ちきりである

 

Visit Lima, and you see a city abuzz with shops, restaurants and a robust new middle class.

リマを訪れて御覧。お店やレストランや中産階級で沸き立った街だと分かるでしょう。

The classroom was abuzz with preparations for that evening’s open house for the parents.

教室は親の学校参観の準備でがやがやしていた。

Washington is abuzz with　rumors of a scandal.

ワシントンはスキャンダルの噂で持ちきりだ。

 

 

abaya [アバイヤ] (n.) アバヤ　　*イスラム女性が着用する頭からつま先まであるゆったりした黒のローブ

 

Would Western women consent to wearing the floor-length black abaya and headscarf that is required of Saudi women?

西洋の女性がサウジ女性に義務づけられている床まである長さの黒いアバヤや頭巾の着用に同意するだろうか。

accost [アコスト]  近寄って声をかける

 He was accosted by three gang members on the subway.

地下鉄で3人のギャングに言い寄られた。

She was so famous that people would accost her on the street and ask for an autograph.

彼女は有名だったので人々は彼女に通りで言い寄ってサインを頼んだ。
