このコラムではLIBERTY代表、藤川恭宏のご学友の国際法の教授であられた長田祐卓 (Osada Yutaka) 先生のボキャブラリー集を皆様に提供させていただきます。
長田先生は慶應義塾大学、法学部、同大学院（博士課程在学中、アメリカトップランキング校の一つ、ジョージタウン大学ローセンターに留学）博士課程終了後、母校慶応大学、駿河台大学、尚美学園大学、大学院で教鞭を取られました。国際法の中でも特に宇宙法を研究され、慶応大学から今年、博士号を授与されました。
このコラムでは特別に長田祐卓先生の長年、蓄積されたとても貴重なボキャブラリー集をご紹介させていただくことになりました。

curate’s egg (n.) (Bri.)

良し悪しあること   *1895年11月9日の英国風刺雑誌パンチに掲載されたジョルジュ・ド・モリエールの漫画に由来。司祭と朝食をとっていた緊張した牧師が「卵が悪くなっているのでは？」と問いかけたのに対し、臆病な余り主賓に不平を言えない牧師が「いいえ、司祭様。その卵の一部は素晴らしいものです。」と答えたもの。本来の意味は、良いと言われている悪いものは社交辞令や臆病さから生まれるという教訓。

The concert was a bit of a curate’s egg: good in some parts, bad in others.

そのコンサートは牧師の卵といったところだった。良し悪し両方あったね。
