このコラムではLIBERTY代表、藤川恭宏のご学友の国際法の教授であられた長田祐卓 (Osada Yutaka) 先生のボキャブラリー集を皆様に提供させていただきます。
長田先生は慶應義塾大学、法学部、同大学院（博士課程在学中、アメリカトップランキング校の一つ、ジョージタウン大学ローセンターに留学）博士課程終了後、母校慶応大学、駿河台大学、尚美学園大学、大学院で教鞭を取られました。国際法の中でも特に宇宙法を研究され、慶応大学から今年、博士号を授与されました。
このコラムでは特別に長田祐卓先生の長年、蓄積されたとても貴重なボキャブラリー集をご紹介させていただくことになりました。

best and brightest (n.) (the～) 最も優秀な人、優秀なエリート
*David Halberstamの1972年の著書The Best and The Britestで広く普及した表現だが、語源的には18世紀に遡る。
Harvard only accepts the best and brightest students to its programs.
ハーバード大は最も優秀な学生だけをその課程に受け入れる。

It’s a good/safe/sure bet that they’ll win. 彼らが勝つのは間違いなさそうだ。
I don’t know what their decision will be, but my bet is that they’ll approve the project.
決定がどうなるか分からないけど、私の見当ではプロジェクトを承認するだろう。
