このコラムではLIBERTY代表、藤川恭宏のご学友の国際法の教授であられた長田祐卓 (Osada Yutaka) 先生のボキャブラリー集を皆様に提供させていただきます。 長田先生は慶應義塾大学、法学部、同大学院（博士課程在学中、アメリカトップランキング校の一つ、ジョージタウン大学ローセンターに留学）博士課程終了後、母校慶応大学、駿河台大学、尚美学園大学、大学院で教鞭を取られました。国際法の中でも特に宇宙法を研究され、慶応大学から今年、博士号を授与されました。

figurative [フィギャラティヴ] (adj.) 比喩的な、造形による、形象的な、比喩の多い、修飾語の多い
The phrase “know your ropes” means literally “to know a lot about ropes,” while its figurativemeaning is “to know a lot about how to do something.”
「自分のロープ知れ」という表現は、文字通り「ロープの多くのことを知れ」という意味だが、比喩的には「物のやり方を多く知れ」という意味である。
