Vocabulary Building from Mr. Osada : Day66

このコラムではLIBERTY代表、藤川恭宏のご学友の国際法の教授であられた長田祐卓 (Osada Yutaka) 先生のボキャブラリー集を皆様に提供させていただきます。
長田先生は慶應義塾大学、法学部、同大学院（博士課程在学中、アメリカトップランキング校の一つ、ジョージタウン大学ローセンターに留学）博士課程終了後、母校慶応大学、駿河台大学、尚美学園大学、大学院で教鞭を取られました。国際法の中でも特に宇宙法を研究され、慶応大学から今年、博士号を授与されました。

*mongerは「ブローカー、商人、（些細なことを）言いふらす人」の意。

陪審員は彼らに詐欺の3つの罪状で有罪宣告した。

contact [コンタクト] (n.) 接触、連絡、接点、交流、関係、仲介者、コンタクトレンズ、(vt.) 接触する、

連絡する

make hand contact with the patients 患者と手で触れ合う

Do not let your skin come in/into contact with the acid.

酸に肌を触れさせないように。

The chemical kills germs on contact. 化学薬品は触れた途端細菌を死滅させる。

lose contact with someone/something 連絡を絶つ

We kept/stayed contact after college. 大学卒業後も連絡を取り続けた。

 

contempt [コンテムプト] (n.) 軽蔑、侮辱

have contempt for someone 軽蔑する= hold someone in contempt

beneath contempt 一顧の価値もない、眼中にない、話にもならない

She’s a liar who is beneath contempt.　話にもならない嘘つきだ。

His treatment of his children is beneath contempt.

彼の子どもの扱い方は話にもならないくらいひどい。

Familiarity breeds contempt. （諺）慣れ過ぎは侮りのもと。

 

contingent [コンティンジェント] (adj.) ありそうな、経験的な、不慮の、偶発的な、臨時の、条件付き

の、依存している、(n.) 代表団、分遣隊、派遣隊、不慮の事故

Our plans are contingent on the weather.　我々の計画は天候次第だ。

痛みでねじれた。

 

contortion [コントーション] (n.) ねじれ、

contorted (adj.) ねじれた、曲解された

contour [カントゥア] (n.) 輪郭、外形、曲線、特徴、抑揚の変化、(adj.) 輪郭を示す、等高線に沿った、

体型に合わせた、(vt.) 輪郭を描く、地形に沿って作る

He loved the sleek contour of the car. その車の流線形が好きだった。

The map showed the contour of the coastline.

地図は海岸線の輪郭を示していた。
